PES: Peace Eco Smile – ONA

PES: Peace Eco Smile” is a promotional anime series collaborated by Toyota Motor Corporation and anime company Studio 4°C. The anime shorts began streaming legally online on May 25, 2012. In case you haven’t heard, you can find them on YouTube HERE.

For a while now, I have been meaning to post my first impressions on the series and since episode 3 is already out . . . what the heck! A shout out to Ben Lee for the heads up.

PES consists of several anime shorts that range from 3 to 4 minutes long. It is currently airing at the moment, but it has done a wonderful job, so far, with the iridescent colors and display of automobiles. However, it doesn’t intend to pressure or annoy you with its constant car displays. Instead, it focuses on getting its message across about the safety rules and regulations of driving. And what better way to do it than through a subtle romance and cute chibi aliens!

The anime doesn’t seem to be very plot driven and has instead taken an approach as an episodic series with a simple theme portrayed throughout each episode. Although there is a side character in the story constantly trying to unveil Pes’s true identity, I can’t see it as nothing more than its comedic relief along with the one-eyed aliens.

Overall, what is truly worth your time are the beautiful colors and sounds. Studio 4°C did a great job in this department, I believe. Especially when it came to picturizing a certain feel or activity. And the sounds just added to the imagery. Throughout, it introduces you to a sole theme song, but it just fits in well with the quirky environment. The voice actors are amateurs, but they certainly don’t sound it. I wouldn’t degrade them of their talent based on their lack of history. I, for one, fell in love with those cute alien voices!

I don’t believe I’ve come across a space – slice of life genre before, but I am not disappointed. I can live with the advertisement, knowing it is being promoted through means of my favorite form of entertainment.
